Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique challenges in conserving their natural resources and adapting to climate change. Capacity at island level to mobilise conservation resources, develop projects to expend resources and to have an impact at local level is limited. At the same time SIDS steward geographically large biodiversity and conservation areas while having small technical and policy units and specialists.
The recent 4th UN Meeting on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States in Antigua and Barbuda affirmed this situation while at the same time demonstrating the incredible leadership of SIDS on these issues. Great strides have been made in some national and regional approaches in SIDS to develop conservation trust funds (CTFs) which have proven to be critical in addressing SIDS capacity challenges. Globally we also see that CTFs are very valuable in creating critical organisation infrastructure for more longterm impact beyond conservation financing on a project to project basis. These approaches are working. This event will highlight the work of these SIDS-led interventions.
