Why is local progress towards more authority of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in conservation lagging behind? Which barriers do local actors face, and how are they addressing them through collective action?
Target 3 of the GBF recognizes the importance of advancing equitable governance of protected and conserved areas, and respecting the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities, including to their traditional territories. In this event, representatives from Indigenous Peoples and local communities will share their stories and experiences of collective action. They will exchange with participants on the barriers that they face, and which strategies they are using to overcome them. The event will close with a sharing of relevant resources and initiatives.
Speakers will be members of the ICCA Consortium, and of the WCPA/CEESP Task Force Advancing Indigenous and Community-led Governance.
