Big Room
The event will showcase examples of how integrating marine biodiversity into NDCs and NBSAPs can address both biodiversity and climate crises, focusing on priority actions and cooperation among Latin American countries.
The oceans have been absorbing human-caused carbon emissions. Coastal ecosystems, like mangroves and coral reefs, are vital for CO2 capture, coastline protection, and supporting biodiversity, as well as local economies and well-being. However, climate change, overfishing, pollution, and habitat loss are threatening their resilience. To address this, marine protected areas, blue corridors, and spatial planning are essential for strengthening these ecosystems, boosting national economies, and meeting international goals. In Latin America, diverse planning and international cooperation are needed. The event will highlight successful integration of marine biodiversity into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), and foster cooperation among Latin American countries.
