Nature positive metrics are essential tools for tracking, assessing, and driving progress towards restoring and maintaining the natural world. These metrics focus on enhancing biodiversity, ensuring that ecosystems recover, and reducing negative impacts from human activities. The adoption of nature positive metrics across the private sector, civil society, and governments can help ensure that development and economic activities are aligned with environmental sustainability and biodiversity goals. For the private sector, nature positive metrics help businesses reduce environmental impact, improve sustainability, comply with regulations, attract eco-conscious investors, and support biodiversity goals. They reduce the risk of greenwashing and greenhushing and safeguard their reputations while aligning to new opportunities for sustainable financing and adopting more sustainable and cost-efficient technologies and practices. Standardisation is also needed across civil society, governments and land-owners to create a shared vision of ‘nature positive’ and shared mode of monitoring and reporting progress.
